Tomim Program

Every child deserves the necessary support to thrive in school.

What happens when the traditional classroom isn’t enough?

Mockup

Like Chaim

In a typical 3rd grade classroom setting, Chaim exhibited behaviors that indicated he was struggling.

• He displayed age-inappropriate behaviors.
• Chaim got into fights with classmates.
• He was oppositional to teacher instructions and sat in class without filling in work.

While the focus remained on managing his behaviors, a key academic factor went largely unnoticed. At the time, Chaim’s comprehension skills were at a Kindergarten level. Although his reading fluency was only slightly below grade level, the gap between reading accuracy and understanding made it challenging for him to engage meaningfully in a mainstream environment — and may help explain the behaviors observed.

Mockup

Like Sholom

In his typical 8th grade classroom setting, Sholom exhibited challenging behaviors and a lack of academic progress.

• He frequently interrupted and struggled to wait his turn.
• Sholom was disorganized, often losing school materials and not following directions.
• He could not focus long enough to finish a worksheet.

Although Sholom was extremely social with his 23 classmates, his struggles in the classroom led his parents to explore whether he might learn better in an alternative school. They searched for a smaller, more tailored environment that could provide the support Sholom needed, while still allowing him to be part of a mainstream social scene.

The Tomim Program

A special education program, within the Darchai Menachem school, designed to unlock their full potential.

The Tomim Program is a special education program within Darchai Menachem. All academic learning, like English, Math, and Science, happens in a core Tomim class where students can access any support they may need. At the same time, students integrate with mainstream classes for recess, prayer and the like, leading to a rich social experience.
THE DIFFERENCE

Building a learning roadmap for every student.

So he lives with success, confidence and competence every day.

CLASSROOM
THE TOMIM WAY
Teachers
The struggling student is one in a crowd. Often, they take on the identity of a "bad kid" or just sit at the back of the class, showing little to no growth. At best, their behaviors are ignored; at worst, they are punished—all so the teacher can maintain class decorum. Yet, the child themselves does not improve; they regress.
Students learn in specialized, small and highly supported classes of 1 Tomim teacher for 3 students! (1:3 in elementary. 1:4 middle. 1:5 high school) so they receive instruction and behavior plans tailored specifically to them.
Supports
Students are evaluated by the Board of Education and receive only what is deemed essential, potentially leaving many learning and behavior gaps unaddressed.
The Tomim Program takes charge of their special education, bringing in any support the child may need to succeed, regardless of any limitations on their IEP/IESP.
Methodologies
Teacher-led, with the majority being frontal learning. A struggling child has a hard time following along. The learning methods are inconsistent, varying by teacher.
Students learn with hands-on materials and cutting-edge methodologies that are tailored to their needs.
Assessments
The teacher has a general feeling of where each kid is in the class, yet is not sure what to do with the students who are falling through the cracks.
The specialized Tomim team sets smart goals for the students and tracks progress. They assess the data and create personalized learning plans for each student.

What happens when a child gets the support they need in a school setting?

Mockup

Chaim is now part of the class!

The Tomim program director connected Chaim with a reading specialist for comprehension intervention and auditory processing support. Tomim also incorporated conceptual language development, helping Chaim build frameworks to understand ideas and express himself. Through this individualized instruction and consistent support, Chaim developed confidence and strengthened his skills. He is now approaching grade level, participating successfully, and has stopped acting out, improving his social standing.
“All of his life, Chaim struggled, and all of a sudden, he’s now learning and has friends. It’s incredible!”
Mockup

Sholom is thriving!

Sholom worked with an excellent BCBA who created a program to help him learn to control his impulses, become more organized, and improve his focus. With his targeted program implemented in the smaller Tomim group, he was able to reach academic success. Spending recess and extracurricular time with the mainstream Darchai class filled his need for a vibrant social life. Shalom is now thriving in and out of the classroom.
“It is amazing to see what Sholom can accomplish when he is not bogged down by all his struggles! His school experience has improved tenfold.”
